1. Reading SAE J300 Viscosity Grades (0W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40)
The number before 'W' (Winter) defines maximum cold-cranking simulator (CCS) viscosity and borderline pumping temperature: 0W pumps down to -40 °C, 5W down to -35 °C, and 10W down to -30 °C. The second number defines kinematic viscosity at 100 °C (7.0–9.3 mm²/s for xW-20, 9.3–12.5 mm²/s for xW-30, and 12.5–16.3 mm²/s for xW-40) plus High-Temperature High-Shear (HTHS) film strength at 150 °C.
2. API SP / ILSAC GF-6 vs European ACEA Sequences
North American and Asian engines typically specify API SP and ILSAC GF-6A/6B, which focus on Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) suppression in turbocharged direct-injection (TGDI) engines and timing chain wear control. European engines with Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPF) or Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) require ACEA C-series (C2, C3, C5, C6) Mid/Low-SAPS oils with sulfated ash ≤ 0.8% and controlled phosphorus/sulfur to prevent filter blockage.
3. Normal vs Severe Service Oil Change Intervals
While OEM schedules list 15,000 km (10,000 mi) under ideal highway conditions, short urban trips (<10 km), stop-and-go traffic, extreme cold, towing, or dusty environments qualify as Severe Service — requiring oil and filter replacement every 7,500–10,000 km (5,000–6,000 mi) or 6–12 months.
