Roadside Breakdown & Collision Emergency Protocol

Follow these 3 immediate safety steps during a highway breakdown or collision.

Step 1 · First 60 Seconds

Secure the Scene & Evacuate Behind Guardrail

  1. Switch on hazard warning lights immediately.
  2. Put on EN ISO 20471 high-visibility vests before exiting the vehicle.
  3. Have all passengers exit on the non-traffic side and move behind the safety barrier/guardrail.
  4. Place the warning triangle 100 m (rural) to 150–200 m (highway) behind the vehicle.
Step 2 · Injuries & Emergency Call

Call 112 (Europe/Global) or 911 (North America)

  1. Report exact highway number, direction of travel, and nearest kilometer/mile marker post.
  2. State the number of injured occupants and any fuel leak, fire risk, or blocked live lanes.
  3. Do not move injured persons unless there is an immediate fire or oncoming traffic hazard.
Step 3 · Documentation

Photograph Positions & Complete Accident Statement

  1. Take 4 wide-angle photos from all four corners showing lane markings, road signs, and vehicle positions.
  2. Photograph license plates, VIN plates, insurance green card/policy numbers, and close-up damage.
  3. In Europe/Latin America, complete and sign the joint European Accident Statement (Constat Amiable / Parte Amistoso) if there are no injuries and both drivers agree on facts.
